Importance of National Income Accounting
Compiling national income data carefully, year after year, is not just an academic exercise — it is the foundation for a wide range of practical decisions, and Maharashtra HSC Economics students are expected to be able to state and explain why national income accounting matters:
- Economic planning and policy-making — governments (both central and state) use national income data and its sectoral breakdown to set targets, decide where to allocate scarce public resources, and design Five-Year and state-level development plans.
- Measuring economic growth — comparing national income (adjusted for price changes, i.e. in real terms) across successive years is the standard way to judge whether an economy is genuinely growing, stagnating, or contracting.
- Assessing the standard of living — Per Capita Income, alongside broader welfare indicators, gives policymakers a working sense of how living standards are changing, and helps in comparing one state or country against another over time.
- Understanding the structure of the economy — the sectoral breakdown of national income (how much comes from agriculture, industry, and services) shows how an economy is evolving structurally, and highlights sectors that may need targeted support.
- Estimating a nation's taxable capacity and defence/administrative capability — a government's realistic capacity to raise taxes, service debt, and fund defence and administration is directly related to the size of national income.
- International and inter-state comparisons — standardised national income measurement lets India's growth and living standards be compared meaningfully against other countries, and lets a state's own economic performance (Maharashtra's, for instance) be compared against India's national average. …
