Meaning and Definition of National Income

National income is the single most important indicator economists, governments, and businesses use to judge how well an economy is performing over a given year. In simple terms, national income is the total money value of all final goods and services produced by the normal residents of a country during an accounting year, usually counted once for the value each activity actually adds, so that nothing is counted twice.

Two terms in that definition need care. Domestic territory is the geographical area over which a country's government exercises full economic control — it includes not just the political boundary but also territorial waters/airspace, ships and aircraft operated by residents, and even embassies of that country located abroad (while excluding foreign embassies located within the country). Normal residents are individuals or institutions that ordinarily live and carry out their main economic activity within a country's domestic territory for a period of one year or more — this is a residency test, not a citizenship test, so a foreign national settled and working in India for over a year counts as a normal resident of India for this purpose, while an Indian citizen posted abroad for several years does not.

In Maharashtra's HSC (MSBSHSE) Std XII Commerce Economics syllabus, this chapter builds on the microeconomic theory studied earlier in the course and moves to how a country's — and by extension a state's — total output and income is actually defined and measured. The core ideas covered here (the aggregates, the circular flow, the three measurement methods) are the same fundamental macroeconomic concepts also taught under the NCERT/CBSE Macroeconomics curriculum elsewhere in India, though this chapter follows Maharashtra's own Std XII Economics textbook sequence and Indian-context examples throughout.

In India, national income is officially compiled and released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), for an accounting year running from 1st April to 31st March.

Definition 1National Income

The total money value of all final goods and services produced by the normal residents of a country during one accounting year, counted at value added to avoid duplication.

Definition 2Domestic Territory

The geographical area under a country's full economic control — its political boundary plus territorial waters/airspace, resident-operated ships/aircraft, and that country's own embassies abroad.

Definition 3Normal Resident

A person or institution ordinarily residing in, and conducting its main economic activity within, a country's domestic territory for one year or more — a residency test, not a citizenship test.
