Take 4-year moving totals, divide by 4, then average consecutive pairs to centre them; trend values run from 1978 to 1983.

Data (Index): 0,2,3,3,2,4,5,6,7,100,2,3,3,2,4,5,6,7,10 for 1976–1985.

Step 1 — 4-yearly moving totals:

0+2+3+3=8, 2+3+3+2=10, 3+3+2+4=12, 3+2+4+5=14, 2+4+5+6=17, 4+5+6+7=22, 5+6+7+10=28.0{+}2{+}3{+}3=8,\ 2{+}3{+}3{+}2=10,\ 3{+}3{+}2{+}4=12,\ 3{+}2{+}4{+}5=14,\ 2{+}4{+}5{+}6=17,\ 4{+}5{+}6{+}7=22,\ 5{+}6{+}7{+}10=28.

Step 2 — 4-yearly moving averages (total/4/4):

2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4.25, 5.5, 72,\ 2.5,\ 3,\ 3.5,\ 4.25,\ 5.5,\ 7 (these lie between the years).

Step 3 — centred trend == average of two consecutive moving averages:

1978: 2+2.52=2.251978:\ \dfrac{2+2.5}{2}=2.25

1979: 2.5+32=2.751979:\ \dfrac{2.5+3}{2}=2.75
