Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that would not occur either in nature or through traditional crossbreeding. Most GMOs currently in use have been engineered mainly to withstand direct herbicide application, and/or to produce their own insecticide; newer technologies are also being used to develop other traits artificially, such as resistance to browning in apples, and to create entirely new organisms through synthetic biology. It is worth noting, honestly, that despite industry promises, there is no clear evidence that the GMOs currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other …
