Introduction: Feeding a Growing Population

Introduction: Feeding a Growing Population

Think About It

Can you recall?

  1. What are hybrid plants?
  2. Different examples of microbes used in household production.
  3. The types or groups of micro-organisms that produce antibiotics.
  4. What are biofertilizers?
  5. What is the source of silk thread?

This chapter brings together every biological route by which food production is raised - breeding better crop plants and farm animals, growing plants from a few cells, rearing bees, fish, silkworms and lac insects, and putting microbes to work in the kitchen, the factory, the sewage plant, the biogas digester and the field. The five recall questions above are answered, in turn, by sections 11.2 (hybrids), 11.7 (household microbes), 11.8 (antibiotic producers), 11.12 (biofertilizers) and 11.6 (silk).

MSBSHSE's HSC Biology syllabus for this chapter covers the same ground as the NCERT/CBSE Class 12 chapters on strategies for enhancement in food production and microbes in human welfare, so the terms used here serve Maharashtra board and CBSE students alike.
