A food chain is a straight-line sequence of organisms in which each one feeds on the organism before it, typically running to four or five trophic levels — for example, grass (producer) → deer (primary consumer/herbivore) → leopard (secondary consumer/carnivore). Food chains are of three types: the grazing food chain (GFC), which begins with living green plants; the detritus food chain (DFC), which begins with dead organic matter and is driven by decomposers (saprotrophs) such as fungi and bacteria; and the parasitic food chain. Each position in a food chain is a trophic level — producers form the first trophic level, herbivores (primary consumers) the second, and carnivores (secondary and higher consumers) the third and beyond. The amount of energy transferred decreases sharply at each step, following the 10% Law, which limits how many trophic levels a single chain can support.
