Step 1. Definition. Decomposition is the process by which decomposers break down complex organic matter — detritus, i.e. dead remains of plants and animals including fecal matter — into simpler inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide, water and mineral nutrients. Step 2. Fragmentation. Detritivores such as earthworms physically break detritus down into smaller fragments or particles, increasing the surface area available for further decomposition. Step 3. Leaching. Water-soluble inorganic nutrients percolate down through the soil horizon and get precipitated as unavailable salts. Step 4. Catabolism. Bacterial and fungal enzymes chemically degrade detritus into simpler inorganic substances, which the microbes absorb. Step 5. Humification and mineralization. Humification leads to the accumulation of humus, a dark-coloured, amorphous, colloidal substance that resists further microbial action, decomposes very slowly, and improves the soil's texture and water-holding capacity. Humus is gradually broken down further by microbes, releasing inorganic nutrients back into the soil in the process called mineralization. Step 6. All these steps op …
