Step 1. A food chain is a straight-line sequence in which each organism feeds on the one before it, typically involving four or five trophic levels — for example, grass → deer → leopard. Step 2. In nature, individual food chains rarely exist in isolation, because many organisms — especially omnivores such as crows, bears and man — feed on more than one type of organism and are themselves fed upon by more than one predator. Step 3. When several food chains interconnect and overlap in this way, sharing producers, consumers, or predators between them, the network formed is called a food web. Step 4.
