Open system: matter and energy cross. Closed system: only energy crosses. Isolated system: neither crosses.

Step 1. In the first sketch (open cup), water vapour freely escapes into the air (matter leaves) and the hot tea also loses heat to the cooler air (energy leaves). Both matter and energy are exchanged -- this is an open system.
