Standard enthalpy of reaction from standard enthalpies of formation

The standard enthalpies of formation of compounds are used to determine the standard enthalpies of reactions. Calculations of ΔrH0\Delta_r H^0 from the ΔfH0\Delta_f H^0 of compounds are based on the following:

i. Standard enthalpies of formation of an element are zero:

ΔfH0(H2)=ΔfH0(Cl2)=ΔfH0(C)=0\Delta_f H^0(\mathrm{H_2}) = \Delta_f H^0(\mathrm{Cl_2}) = \Delta_f H^0(\mathrm{C}) = 0

ii. The standard enthalpy of formation of a compound is equal to its standard enthalpy:

ΔfH0(compound)=H0(compound)\Delta_f H^0(\text{compound}) = H^0(\text{compound})

Consider the reaction

aA+bB⟶cC+dDa\mathrm{A} + b\mathrm{B} \longrightarrow c\mathrm{C} + d\mathrm{D}

The standard enthalpy of the reaction is given by

ΔrH0=(cHC0+dHD0)−(aHA0+bHB0)\Delta_r H^0 = (cH^0_C + dH^0_D) - (aH^0_A + bH^0_B) …
