Work done in chemical reaction

The work done by a system at constant temperature and pressure is W=−Pext ΔVW = -P_{ext}\,\Delta V. Assuming Pext=PP_{ext} = P,

W=−P ΔV=−P (V2−V1)=−PV2+PV1W = -P\,\Delta V = -P\,(V_2 - V_1) = -PV_2 + PV_1

If the gases were ideal, using Eq. (4.26), PV1=n1RTPV_1 = n_1RT and PV2=n2RTPV_2 = n_2RT. At constant temperature and pressure,

W=−n2RT+n1RT=−(n2−n1) RTW = -n_2RT + n_1RT = -(n_2 - n_1)\,RT

=−Δng RT...(4.28)= -\Delta n_g\,RT \qquad \text{...(4.28)}

The above equation gives the work done by the system in chemical reactions. The sign of WW depends on ΔV\Delta V. We consider the following cases:

i. If n2>n1n_2 > n_1, Δng\Delta n_g is positive and W<0W < 0, or work is done by the system.

ii. If n1>n2n_1 > n_2, Δng\Delta n_g is negative and W>0W > 0, or work is done on the system. …
