Nanoparticles and Nanotechnology -- Advantages and Disadvantages
Nanotechnology brings genuine advantages across several sectors. In electronics and computing, it represents a revolution in device capability. In the energy sector, nanotechnology is expected to make solar power more economical, while also making energy-storage devices more efficient. In the medical field, nanotechnology enables the manufacture of smart drugs that help patients cure faster and with fewer side effects, including in the treatment of life-threatening diseases such as cancer and diabetes. But despite these real possibilities and advancements, nanotechnology also carries certain potential risks and disadvantages. It has raised the general standard of living, but at the same time it has increased pollution, including air pollution -- this specific form of pollution, caused by nanotechnology and its byproducts, is referred to as nano pollution, and it is described as being very dangerous for living organisms. Nanoparticles can cause lung damage: inhaled particulate matter at the nanoscale can be deposited throughout the human respiratory tract and ultimately deposit in the lungs themselves, where it can cause harm. The specific characteristics of a nanoparticle that determine how relevant it is to health effects are its size, its chemical composition, and its …
