Q.Define
Step 1. Define green chemistry (Section 16.1). Green Chemistry is the use of chemistry for pollution prevention, through environmentally conscious design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. It is also described, more generally, as an approach to chemistry that aims to maximise efficiency and minimise hazardous effects on human health and the environment.
Step 2. Define sustainable development (Section 16.2). Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs; the concept has continued to evolve to also emphasise protecting the world's resources.
Step 3. Note the link between the two. Green chemistry is presented as the practical mechanism by which sustainable development is achieved in the chemical industry -- adopting its twelve principles is how the industry works toward meeting present needs without compromising future ones.
Green chemistry: chemistry used for pollution prevention through environmentally conscious design of chemical products and processes that reduce/eliminate hazardous substances. Sustainable development: development meeting present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs.
