Q.The following pictures show population of bands for materials having different electrical properties. Classify them as insulator, semiconductor or a metal.
Step 1. In the first (left) picture the empty band sits directly on top of the filled band -- there is no energy gap (the bands touch/overlap). With no gap, electrons move freely into vacant levels, which is the band population of a metal.
Step 2. In the second (middle) picture the filled valence band and the empty conduction band are separated by a large energy gap that thermal energy cannot bridge -- the band population of an insulator.
Step 3. In the third (right) picture the same filled-valence/empty-conduction pattern appears but with only a small gap, which some electrons can cross at ordinary temperature -- the band population of a semiconductor.
