Q.What are valence band and conduction band?
Step 1. Band theory pictures a solid's electrons as occupying bands -- closely spaced sets of energy levels formed from the interaction of the outermost atomic orbitals of all the atoms in the solid.
Step 2. The conduction band is the highest-energy band containing electrons; it may be partially filled or entirely vacant, and any electrons occupying it are mobile and delocalised over the whole solid, free to carry an electric current when a potential is applied.
Step 3. The valence band is the band of lower energy than the conduction band; its electrons remain tightly bound to their respective nuclei and so cannot move freely, meaning they cannot by themselves carry current.
Conduction band = highest-energy band containing mobile, delocalised electrons; valence band = lower-energy band whose electrons are tightly bound and immobile.
