The four Central Economic Problems facing every society are: (1) What to produce, (2) How to produce, (3) For whom to produce, and (4) Problem of economic growth / efficient utilisation of resources.

Because every society's resources (land, labour, capital) are SCARCE relative to UNLIMITED human wants, every economy — whatever its political system — must resolve these central allocation problems:

  1. What to produce and in what quantities — which goods and services to produce (e.g. more consumer goods or more capital goods; more guns or more butter), since producing more of one thing with limited resources means producing less of something else.
  2. How to produce — which technique/combination of factors (labour-intensive or capital-intensive methods) to use to produce the chosen goods, so as to make the most efficient use of scarce resources.
  3. For whom to produce — how the economy's total output/national income is to be distributed among its members, i.e. who gets how much of what is produced. …
