A rigid body is one whose shape and size never change — every pair of particles inside it stays a fixed distance apart no matter what forces act on it.

In reality every material deforms at least a little under stress. But for many mechanics problems (rotational motion, pure translation, rolling) that deformation is negligible, so physicists idealise the object as a rigid body: a system of particles whose relative positions do not change with time, regardless of the external forces applied.

Mathematically, if P1P_1 and P2P_2 are any two particles of the body with position vectors r⃗1,r⃗2\vec r_1, \vec r_2, then ∣r⃗1−r⃗2∣|\vec r_1 - \vec r_2| = constant, for all time and under all applied forces.
