Using the perpendicular axis theorem on the ring's known axial moment of inertia (MR²) and the symmetry of the ring, the moment of inertia about any diameter comes out to (1/2)MR² — option (b).

The moment of inertia of a uniform circular ring of mass M and radius R about an axis through its centre, perpendicular to its plane (the ring's own natural symmetry axis) is a standard result:

I_axis = MR^2

Now consider two perpendicular diameters of the ring lying IN its plane, say the x-axis and y-axis, both passing through the centre. By the perpendicular axis theorem, for any planar lamina/ring:

I_axis (perpendicular to plane) = I_x + I_y
