In a progressive wave, all particles of the medium oscillate with the same amplitude and frequency but with a phase lag along the propagation direction, and the wave carries energy through the medium without any net transport of matter.

A progressive (or travelling) wave is a disturbance that moves continuously through a medium, transferring energy from one point to another. Its key characteristics include:

  1. All particles have the same amplitude and frequency: Every particle of the medium through which the wave travels vibrates with the same amplitude and the same frequency (and hence the same period) as the source — only the phase of vibration differs from particle to particle, each successive particle lagging slightly behind the one before it in the direction of wave travel.

  2. Energy is transported, matter is not: The wave transports energy (and momentum) from the source to distant points in the medium, but the individual particles of the medium themselves only oscillate about their fixed mean/equilibrium positions — there is no net, permanent transport of the material of the medium itself in the direction of the wave.
