Longitudinal and transverse waves differ in the direction particles vibrate relative to the wave's travel direction, in the shape of the disturbance they create, and in which media they can travel through.

1. Direction of particle vibration:

In a longitudinal wave, the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth parallel to the direction in which the wave itself travels (e.g. sound waves in air). In a transverse wave, the particles vibrate perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation (e.g. waves on a stretched string, or light waves).

2. Nature of the disturbance:

A longitudinal wave propagates as a series of alternating regions of compression (particles closer together, higher pressure/density) and rarefaction (particles farther apart, lower pressure/density). A transverse wave propagates as alternating crests (points of maximum positive displacement) and troughs (points of maximum negative displacement).
