Gaining ratio is the ratio in which the continuing partners acquire (gain) the share of profit given up by a partner who retires or dies.

When a partner retires or dies, his/her share of profit is taken over by the remaining (continuing) partners. The ratio in which the continuing partners acquire this share is called the Gaining Ratio.

It is computed as:

Gaining Ratio = New Profit Sharing Ratio − Old Profit Sharing Ratio
