Over 1980-2013, both India and China recorded a marked acceleration in growth compared to earlier decades, but China's growth rate was significantly higher and more consistent than India's throughout the period, largely because China's market-oriented reforms began in 1978, about 13 years before India launched its own reforms in 1991.

China initiated economic reforms in 1978 under Deng Xiaoping, opening up its economy, decollectivising agriculture, encouraging foreign investment in special economic zones, and promoting export-oriented manufacturing. As a result, China's GDP growth rate accelerated rapidly through the 1980s and 1990s, averaging close to 10% per annum for much of the 1980-2013 period -- among the fastest sustained growth rates recorded by any large economy in modern history. India, by contrast, pursued a more gradual, inward-looking strategy until its balance-of-payments crisis in 1991 forced a shift to liberalisation; India's growth during the 1980s was moderate (around 5-6%), and it was only after the 1991 reforms that growth accelerated further, averaging roughly 6% per annum over the following decades, still notably below China's pace.
