Both India and China started economic planning from a broadly similar position in the early 1950s, but China began market-oriented reforms earlier (1978) than India (1991) and pursued them more aggressively, especially in manufacturing and export-led growth. On most Human Development Indicators -- life expectancy at birth, adult literacy rate, infant mortality rate, and per-capita income (GNI) -- China has generally achieved better outcomes than India, reflecting its sustained, large-scale public investment in health, nutrition, education and infrastructure alongside rapid industrial growth. India, by contrast, has grown more through its services sector, retains a more diversified democratic political structure, and has made slower but steady gains in health and education indicators, though it still lags China on most composite HDI measures (India typically ranks lower than China on the UNDP's Human Development Index).
