When and why it was established. It was established on 1 January 2015, replacing the Planning Commission (which had existed since 1950). The change reflected a shift away from top-down, centralised planning towards a body that advises the government and promotes partnership with the states.
What it does (in brief). Unlike the Planning Commission, NITI Aayog does not allocate funds to states. Instead it:
