A half-wave rectifier circuit consists of a step-down transformer whose secondary is connected in series with a single p-n junction diode and a load resistor RLR_L. During the positive half-cycle of the AC input, the diode is forward biased and conducts, so current flows through RLR_L and a voltage (following the shape of the positive half of the input sine wave) appears across it. During the negative half-cycle, the diode is reverse biased and does not conduct, so no current flows and the output voltage across RLR_L is zero.
