Cortisol, a glucocorticoid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex, is called the stress hormone because it helps the body respond to and cope with stressful situations.

Role of cortisol: the adrenal cortex (the outer part of the adrenal gland) secretes a group of hormones called corticoids, which include glucocorticoids (mainly cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (mainly aldosterone). Cortisol plays a very important role in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism in the body, and stimulates the breakdown of proteins and lipids to provide energy during demanding or stressful conditions. It also helps maintain proper cardiovascular function and kidney function, and produces a significant anti-inflammatory response.
