Addison's disease is due to hyposecretion of adrenal cortex hormones (weakness, weight loss, low BP, skin bronzing); Cushing's syndrome is due to hypersecretion of glucocorticoids/cortisol (moon face, obesity, high blood sugar and BP).

The adrenal cortex secretes corticoid hormones - mainly glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (e.g. aldosterone). Abnormal secretion of these hormones causes two disorders:

  1. Addison's disease (due to hyposecretion / deficiency):
  • Caused by decreased secretion of adrenal cortical hormones.

  • Symptoms: extreme weakness and fatigue, weight loss, low blood pressure, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), disturbance of salt and water balance, and bronzing (abnormal darkening) of the skin. It can be life-threatening if untreated.

  1. Cushing's syndrome (due to hypersecretion / excess):
  • Caused by excessive secretion of glucocorticoids (cortisol) from the adrenal cortex. …
