Addison's disease and Cushing's syndrome are opposite disorders of the adrenal cortex — under-secretion versus over-secretion of corticosteroids, mainly cortisol.

Addison's disease (hypoadrenalism):

  • Caused by hypoactivity (under-secretion) of the adrenal cortex, leading to a deficiency of glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (aldosterone).
  • Symptoms: chronic muscular weakness and fatigue, low blood pressure (hypotension), weight loss, low blood glucose, disturbed electrolyte (Na+/K+) balance, and characteristic bronze/dark pigmentation of the skin (due to raised ACTH, which shares a precursor with MSH).
