Both functional groups contain the carbonyl group C=OC=O; an aldehyde has it at the end of the chain with one H attached, a ketone has it between two carbon chains.

The aldehyde functional group

An aldehyde's functional group is the formyl/aldehydic group, −CHO-CHO, which can be written explicitly as −CH=O-CH=O: the carbonyl carbon is bonded to one hydrogen atom and one R group (or H, for methanal), and is always a terminal (end-of-chain) group. General formula: R−CHOR-CHO.

The ketone functional group
