Benzaldehyde undergoes nucleophilic addition with HCNHCN to give a cyanohydrin, whose nitrile group is then hydrolysed under acid to a carboxylic acid.

Step 1 — reaction with HCNHCN: The carbonyl carbon of benzaldehyde (C6H5CHOC_6H_5CHO) is electrophilic; cyanide ion (CN−CN^-, from HCNHCN/a trace of base) attacks it in a nucleophilic addition, and after protonation of the resulting alkoxide, a cyanohydrin is formed:

C6H5CHO+HCN→C6H5−CH(OH)−CN  (=A)C_6H_5CHO + HCN \rightarrow C_6H_5-CH(OH)-CN \;(=A)

AA is benzaldehyde cyanohydrin, systematically 2-hydroxy-2-phenylacetonitrile (mandelonitrile).
