A transformer transfers electrical energy between two coils purely through their shared, changing magnetic flux, with no direct electrical connection.

Principle

A transformer works on the principle of mutual electromagnetic induction: an alternating current in the primary coil produces a continuously changing magnetic flux; when this flux is linked with a secondary coil (via a common soft-iron core), it induces an alternating EMF in the secondary, by Faraday's law.

Working

The primary coil (NpN_p turns) is connected to the input AC supply; the secondary coil (NsN_s turns) is wound on the same core and delivers the output. The flux Φ\Phi per turn is (ideally) the same in both coils (common core, no leakage), so:

εsεp=NsNp\frac{\varepsilon_s}{\varepsilon_p} = \frac{N_s}{N_p}

— a step-up transformer has Ns>NpN_s>N_p (raises voltage), a step-down transformer has Ns<NpN_s<N_p (lowers voltage), with (for an ideal, lossless transformer) εpIp=εsIs\varepsilon_pI_p=\varepsilon_sI_s.
