A transformer transfers AC power between coils by mutual induction through a shared core; stepping voltage up for transmission and down for use minimises I2RI^2R transmission losses.

Solution:

Working principle: A transformer consists of a primary and a secondary coil wound on a common laminated soft-iron core. When an alternating e.m.f. is applied to the primary, it drives an alternating current that sets up an alternating magnetic flux in the core. Since the secondary coil links (almost) the same flux, by Faraday's law of mutual induction, an alternating e.m.f. is induced in the secondary coil, with the turns ratio giving:

VsVp=NsNp\frac{V_s}{V_p} = \frac{N_s}{N_p}
