Because the potential gradient along the potentiometer wire is the same for both measurements, the ratio of balancing lengths directly gives the ratio of the two EMFs.

Circuit: A potentiometer wire AB is connected in series with a driver battery (through a rheostat and key KK) to set up a steady current, giving a uniform potential gradient kk (V/m) along the wire. The two cells whose EMFs E1E_1 and E2E_2 are to be compared are connected, one at a time, through a two-way key and a galvanometer to the wire — the cell's positive terminal to end A, and its other terminal through the galvanometer to a sliding jockey on the wire.

Procedure: With the two-way key connecting cell 1, the jockey is slid along the wire until the galvanometer shows zero deflection (null point), at balancing length l1l_1 from A. At balance:

E1=k l1E_1 = k\,l_1
