Octal-to-binary is a direct substitution — each octal digit becomes exactly 3 bits (8 = 2^3), including any middle zeros.

Why substitution works. One octal digit carries exactly the information of 3 bits, so the conversion is a re-labelling with no arithmetic.

Working for (705)8:

Octal digit3-bit binary
7111
0000
5101
(705)8 = 111 000 101 = (111000101)2

Verification — both equal the same decimal value:

(705)8 = 7x64 + 0x8 + 5x1 = 453 …
