Practice: Kapalbhati ("shining skull") is a cleansing kriya/breath done sitting in a comfortable posture with the spine erect. The exhalation is short, sharp and forceful, produced by a quick inward contraction of the abdominal muscles, while the inhalation is passive and automatic as the abdomen relaxes. It is performed in rounds of rapid strokes. It clears the respiratory passages, energises the body and strengthens the abdominal muscles.
Main precautions and contraindications:
- Practise on an empty stomach and keep the strokes rhythmic, not violent.
- Avoid in cases of high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, epilepsy and recent abdominal surgery. …
