Darwin proposed that evolution occurs through natural selection acting on heritable variation, favouring the survival and reproduction of the fittest individuals.

Charles Darwin, in his book 'On the Origin of Species' (1859), proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection, based on the following observations and inferences:

  1. Overproduction: All organisms have the capacity to reproduce at a high rate and tend to produce far more offspring than can possibly survive to adulthood.
  2. Limited resources and struggle for existence: Since food, space and other resources in nature are limited, this overproduction leads to intense competition (a 'struggle for existence') among individuals - with other members of the same species, with other species, and with the environment.
  3. Variation: No two individuals in a population are exactly identical; heritable variations naturally occur among individuals of a species, some of which may be advantageous under prevailing conditions.
  4. Natural selection / survival of the fittest: Individuals with variations that make them better suited (fitter) to their environment have a higher chance of surviving this struggle and successfully reproducing, while the less-fit individuals are eliminated. Nature thus 'selects' the fitter variants - this differential reproductive success is natural selection. …
