Oncogenes (activated forms of cellular proto-oncogenes) cause cancer by promoting uncontrolled cell division.

Normal cells contain proto-oncogenes that regulate normal cell growth and division. When these become altered (by mutation, viral action, etc.) they turn into oncogenes (cellular oncogenes, c-onc), which drive uncontrolled, unregulated cell proliferation, forming tumours — i.e., cancer. Certain oncogenic viruses also carry viral oncogenes (v-onc).
