The female reproductive system = ovaries + fallopian tubes + uterus + cervix + vagina + external genitalia, plus mammary glands, working together to produce ova, allow fertilization and support pregnancy.

The human female reproductive system is located in the pelvic region and consists of the following parts:

  • Ovaries - a pair of primary sex organs attached to the pelvic wall and uterus by ligaments. Each ovary produces the female gamete (ovum) and secretes the hormones oestrogen and progesterone.
  • Fallopian tubes (oviducts) - a pair of tubes about 10-12 cm long; the funnel-shaped infundibulum with finger-like fimbriae collects the ovulated egg, the ampulla is the site of fertilization, and the isthmus connects to the uterus.
  • Uterus (womb) - a single, hollow, pear-shaped muscular organ where the embryo implants and develops. Its wall has three layers: outer perimetrium, thick muscular myometrium, and inner glandular endometrium (which undergoes menstrual changes).
  • Cervix - the narrow neck of the uterus opening into the vagina; the cervical canal and vagina form the birth canal.
