The human female reproductive system is located in the pelvic region and consists of the following parts (as would be shown in a labelled diagram):

  1. Ovaries (a pair): The primary female sex organs, one on each side of the lower abdomen. Each ovary produces the ova (eggs) and secretes the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. It contains numerous ovarian follicles at different stages.

  2. Fallopian tubes / Oviducts (a pair): Each tube is about 10-12 cm long and carries the ovum from the ovary towards the uterus. Its parts are:

  • Infundibulum: the funnel-shaped end near the ovary, bearing finger-like fimbriae that collect the released ovum.

  • Ampulla: the wider middle part where fertilisation normally takes place.

  • Isthmus: the narrow last part joining the uterus.

  1. Uterus (womb): A single, hollow, pear-shaped muscular organ where the embryo/foetus develops. Its wall has three layers - the outer perimetrium, the thick middle muscular myometrium (contracts during childbirth), and the inner glandular endometrium (which thickens to receive the embryo and is shed during menstruation).

  2. Cervix: The narrow lower neck of the uterus that opens into the vagina; the cervical canal and vagina together form the birth canal.

  3. Vagina: A muscular, elastic tube that receives the sperm during copulation and serves as the passage for the baby during birth.
