Short notes on Linkage (genetics), Biofertilizer (microbes) and Parthenocarpy (plant reproduction) - three of the six listed topics, as required ('any three').

(a) Linkage

  1. Linkage is the tendency of two or more genes located on the same chromosome to be inherited together, rather than assorting independently, because they do not lie on different chromosome pairs (this is an exception to Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment).
  2. It was demonstrated by T.H. Morgan through dihybrid crosses in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, where parental (non-recombinant) gene combinations appeared in a much higher proportion than the expected 1:1:1:1 ratio.
  3. Genes lying very close together on a chromosome show 'complete linkage' (almost always inherited together, e.g., certain genes in Drosophila males), while genes farther apart show 'incomplete linkage' because crossing over between homologous chromosomes during meiosis can separate them, producing recombinant offspring.

(b) Biofertilizer

  1. Biofertilizers are organisms (bacteria, cyanobacteria/blue-green algae, or fungi) that enrich the nutrient quality of soil, mainly by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, and serve as an eco-friendly, low-cost alternative/supplement to chemical fertilizers.
  2. Examples include symbiotic Rhizobium in legume root nodules, free-living Azotobacter and Azospirillum in soil, cyanobacteria like Anabaena, Nostoc and Oscillatoria (which also add organic matter to soil), and mycorrhizal fungi (e.g. Glomus) which improve phosphorus uptake.
  3. Their use reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers, thereby lowering the risk of soil and water pollution (e.g., eutrophication) while improving long-term soil fertility.
