Sex-linked inheritance = inheritance of genes on the sex chromosomes; haemophilia is an X-linked recessive clotting disorder passed from carrier mothers to sons (criss-cross).

Sex-linked inheritance is the inheritance of characters whose genes are located on the sex chromosomes (X or Y) rather than the autosomes. Genes on the X chromosome show X-linked inheritance and those on the Y show Y-linked (holandric) inheritance. Because males are XY (hemizygous), a single recessive allele on their one X chromosome is expressed, so X-linked recessive traits appear more often in males and are transmitted by criss-cross inheritance (father → carrier daughter → grandson).

Inheritance of haemophilia (bleeder's disease):

Haemophilia is an X-linked recessive disorder in which the blood fails to clot (or clots very slowly) because a clotting factor (Factor VIII in haemophilia-A, Factor IX in haemophilia-B) is deficient; even a minor injury may cause continuous bleeding.

Let X^H = normal allele (dominant), X^h = haemophilia allele (recessive).

  • Cross: Carrier female (X^H X^h) × Normal male (X^H Y):
    • Daughters: ½ X^H X^H (normal), ½ X^H X^h (carrier).
    • Sons: ½ X^H Y (normal), ½ X^h Y (haemophilic). …
