Criss-cross inheritance is the passing of an X-linked trait from father to grandson through the carrier daughter.

Genes located on the X chromosome show a special pattern of transmission. A father passes his single X chromosome only to his daughters (his sons get his Y). If that X carries a recessive trait (e.g. colour blindness or haemophilia), the daughter becomes a carrier, and she in turn can transmit that X to her sons, who then express the trait.
