Van Arkel: Zr + I2 → volatile ZrI4, decomposed on a hot W filament → ultrapure Zr + I2.

The van Arkel–de Boer method gives very pure zirconium (and titanium). It works in two steps:

  1. Impure zirconium is heated with iodine at moderate temperature (~870 K). Only zirconium reacts to give the volatile covalent iodide, leaving impurities (like carbon, oxygen, nitrogen) behind: Zr(impure) + 2I2 → ZrI4 (vapour).
  2. The ZrI4 vapour is passed over an electrically heated tungsten filament at about 1800 K, where it decomposes, depositing pure zirconium on the filament and releasing iodine for reuse: …
