Siemens' ozoniser apparatus for the preparation of ozone
Siemens' ozoniser apparatus for the preparation of ozone

A Siemen's ozoniser makes O3 from dry O2 by silent electric discharge; O3 oxidises PbS → PbSO4 and Fe2+ → Fe3+.

Siemen's ozoniser: The apparatus consists of two concentric glass tubes. The inner surface of the outer tube and the outer surface of the inner tube are coated with tin foil, which act as the two electrodes and are connected to a source of high alternating voltage. Dry, pure oxygen is passed slowly through the annular space between the tubes, where it experiences a silent electric discharge (no sparking). About 10% of the oxygen is converted to ozone, and 'ozonised oxygen' leaves from the outlet. Since the reaction 3O2 → 2O3 is endothermic, the apparatus is kept cool.

(Note: no labelled figure was supplied with this question. The setup to be drawn is the pair of concentric tubes with tin-foil electrodes, an inlet for dry O2 and an outlet for ozonised oxygen, connected to a high-voltage induction coil.) …
