Photoelectric effect: light ejects electrons from a metal. Einstein: KE_max = h*nu - phi_0. Threshold frequency nu_0 = phi_0/h is the minimum frequency below which no emission occurs.

What is the photoelectric effect (1 mark):

The photoelectric effect is the phenomenon of emission of electrons (photoelectrons) from the surface of a metal when electromagnetic radiation (light) of a sufficiently high frequency falls on it.

Einstein's photoelectric equation (4 marks):

Einstein treated light as a stream of energy packets called photons, each of energy h*nu. When a photon strikes the metal it is completely absorbed by a single electron. Part of the photon energy is used to free the electron from the metal (the work function phi_0), and the rest appears as the kinetic energy of the emitted electron. Energy conservation gives:

h*nu = phi_0 + (1/2) m v_max^2,

or

(1/2) m v_max^2 = h*nu - phi_0.

Here:

  • h*nu = energy of the incident photon,
  • phi_0 = work function (minimum energy to remove an electron),
  • (1/2) m v_max^2 = KE_max = maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectron.

Concept of threshold frequency (2 marks):

An electron can be emitted only if the photon supplies at least the work function energy, i.e. h*nu >= phi_0. The minimum frequency for which emission just begins (KE_max = 0) is the threshold frequency nu_0:
