The earth's magnetic field at a place is completely described by three quantities: declination, dip (inclination), and the horizontal component of the field.

At any place on the earth's surface, the earth's total magnetic field B can be fully specified using three quantities, called the magnetic elements:

  1. Magnetic declination (θ): the angle between the geographic meridian (true north–south direction, towards the geographic pole) and the magnetic meridian (the vertical plane containing the earth's magnetic field direction, i.e. the direction a compass needle points) at that place. It tells us how far the compass needle deviates from true geographic north.

  2. Angle of dip or magnetic inclination (δ): the angle that the earth's total magnetic field B makes with the horizontal direction, in the magnetic meridian plane, at that place. A freely suspended magnetic needle, free to rotate in the vertical plane, aligns along the direction of B and dips below the horizontal by this angle δ (dip is 0° at the magnetic equator and 90° at the magnetic poles).
