A compass does not point exactly to true (geographic) north - the small angle between true north and the compass's magnetic north, at a given place, is called the magnetic declination.

Explanation

The Earth has both a geographic axis (through the true North and South poles, about which it spins) and a magnetic axis (joining its magnetic poles). These two axes do not coincide - the magnetic poles are offset from the geographic poles.

At any place on Earth's surface:
