The nuclear (strong) force is a short-range, extremely strong, charge-independent, saturating force that binds nucleons together in a nucleus.

Characteristics of nuclear force:

  1. Short range: The nuclear force acts only over very short distances, of the order of 2–3 fermi (1 fm = 10⁻¹⁵ m). Beyond about 3–4 fm it becomes negligible; below about 0.5–0.7 fm it becomes strongly repulsive, preventing nucleons from collapsing into each other.

  2. Strongest force in nature: At nuclear distances, the nuclear force is far stronger than gravitational or electrostatic (Coulomb) forces — strong enough to bind positively charged protons together despite their mutual electrostatic repulsion.

  3. Charge independence: The nuclear force between any pair of nucleons — proton-proton, neutron-neutron, or proton-neutron — is approximately the same, independent of their charge.
