The nuclear force is short-range, extremely strong, charge-independent, and saturating in nature.

Four important properties of the nuclear (strong) force:

  1. Short range: It acts only over very short distances of the order of 2–3 fm; beyond about 3–4 fm it becomes negligible, unlike the long-range gravitational and Coulomb forces.
  2. Strongest force in nature: Over nuclear distances it is far stronger than the electrostatic repulsion between protons or the gravitational force between nucleons — strong enough to bind protons together despite their mutual Coulomb repulsion.
  3. Charge independence: The nuclear force between a pair of protons, a pair of neutrons, or a proton-neutron pair is approximately the same, i.e. it does not depend on the electric charge of the nucleons. …
