The nuclear (strong) force binding nucleons is the strongest known force, but acts only over a very short range, is independent of charge, saturates, and depends on nucleon spin.

Characteristics of the nuclear force:

  1. Strongest force in nature: at nuclear distances (~1 fm), the nuclear force is roughly 100 times stronger than the electromagnetic (Coulomb) force, and vastly stronger than gravity — this is why it can overcome the strong electrostatic repulsion between protons packed inside a tiny nucleus.

  2. Short-range force: it is strongly attractive over a very short range of about 1–3 femtometres (fm), and falls off extremely rapidly (faster than any inverse-power law) beyond about 3 fm, becoming essentially negligible beyond ~10 fm. This is in sharp contrast to gravity and the Coulomb force, which act over infinite range.

  3. Charge-independence: the nuclear force between any pair of nucleons — proton–proton, neutron–neutron, or proton–neutron — is (very nearly) the same, once the (much weaker) Coulomb repulsion between two protons is separately accounted for. The nuclear force itself does not 'see' electric charge.
